Antique Silver Wine Coasters
Antique silver wine coasters undoubtedly bring an element of style and elegance to any dinner party. Designed to protect the table from a bottle or decanter, the bases of silver wine coasters are usually of wood, surrounded by a silver mount or gallery. Typically antique silver wine coasters are found in pairs- one for each end of the dining table. Now even at smaller affairs a pair is still preferable, due to the practice of serving water at the table, or even different colours of wine!It is not uncommon though, to find a single antique silver wine coaster, which for many people is enough. Single Antique Silver Wine Coasters are still perfectly useful though, but perhaps it is fair to say that at a grand dinner party one would prefer to have a pair.
Antique silver Wine coasters are an invention of the late 18th century, around 1770, and the earliest sorts have charming pierced designs and decoration, with beaded or reeded borders. By 1790 they are also sometimes prettily Bright Cut. In the 19th century antique silver wine coasters are usually solid sided with elegant gadroon or gadroon and shell borders, but of course many other wonderful designs exist.
