A set of Four Georgian Old Sheffield Plate candlesticks c1775SOLD

This rather magnificent set of four Georgian Old Sheffield Plate candlesticks are a beautiful and rare lot.

It is rare to find Georgian candlesticks in sets of four- a much more useful number for the dining table than a simple pair, as well as having a greater sense of importance and gravitas! They are of column form, very typical neoclassical style which the Georgians just got so right. They are of loaded manufacture, and crisp and beautifully finished.

Each silver plate Candlestick stands 11 inches tall.

The set of four silver plate candlesticks are in excellent condition. As one likes to see on Old Sheffield Plate the copper is wearing through just a little on the high points, which looks wonderful against a red wood such as mahogany. They have a lovely antique patina, and have been well cared for. One of the sconces (the drip pans which prevent wax from dripping on the table) is repaired as shown, but this doesn't show when it is in place in the candlestick. This is a minor imperfection, and reflected in the price.

A beautiful and rare set of Neoclassical candlesticks made in Old Sheffield Plate, and in wonderful condition. They would add a sense of elegance and grandeur to any dining table or mantelpiece!
