A Russian Silver Cloisonn Enamel Kovsh: 1st Artel for FabergSOLD
This beautiful little Russian cloisonné enamel Kovsh was made in Moscow circa 1910 and bears the mark for the important "First Artel", who made for Fabergé.
The First Artel was formed when Fabergé workmaster Julius Rappoport died, leaving his workshop and equipment to his workers in gratitude for their faithful service. Fabergé continued to treat the First Artel as they had done Julius Rappaport, giving them comissions and ordering pieces from them. In this way the first Artel was a sort of communal Fabergé workmaster.
The Kovsh is of beautiful workmanship as one would expect. The colours are unusual. Furthermore, many of the cloisons contain enamel of several different colours, to produce a "painted" effect. This is more desirable and rarer than the normal sort- one colour per cloison.
The condition of this beautiful little Russian cloisonné Kovsh is excellent- there is no damage or repair to the silver or enamel. The silver is gilt, and the gilding is not worn.
A superb piece of Russian cloisonné which would grace any collection.
