A late Regency Old Sheffield Plate Snuffer on Tray (wick trimmers)SOLD
This beautiful pair of Georgian Old Sheffield Plate candle snuffers are highly ornate, and come on matching tray. "Candle snuffer" is the regularly used term, but these are in fact Wick Trimmers. They date back to the time before the vapourising wick. As candles burned down the wick did not burn away, but instead grew longer, causing a dangerously long flame! Wicks had to be trimmed as the candle burned.
This pair date to approximately 1825, and come with an almost identical tray of similar date. The tray is crested, and of lovely quality.
