An Old Sheffield Plate Argyle made in the Georgian periodSOLD
This charming Old Sheffield Plate Argyle was made in Sheffield circa 1775, and is of beautiful design and quality. It bears an armorial crest, and original fruitwood handle. There is a slight lead repair to the finial, and I believe that although the patina is rather nice and there is some bleeding, it has been re-plated in the Victorian era.
Old Sheffield Plate Argyles are rare and fine objects, and highly collectable. This particular example is in very good re-plated condition. Argyles are actually gravy boats, but with an insulating double skin, which can be filled with hot water, to provide a thermos effect. The hot gravy is poured inside, while the hot water is poured in to a flap on the Argyle's handle. I believe the handle to be original fruitwood.
A beautiful Old Sheffield Plate Argyle which would grace the dinner table, or any fine collection of Antique Old Sheffield Plate.
