A Queen Anne Britannia Standard Silver Tumbler CupSOLD
This beautiful Britannia silver tumbler cup, silver-gilt with gold, was made by Nathaniel Locke in 1701 or 1707. The cup bears Britannia silver standard hallmark which was introduced by a 1697 Parliament's Act and compulsory until 1720. Britannia silver is an alloy silver containing 95.84% silver (cf. Sterling silver contains 92.5%).
This tumbler features the cartouche in rococo style, and its diamond shape indicates that it was owned by a woman at that time.
Traditionally, tumbler cups were designed for bumpy activities of travelling. Thus they needed to withstand the uneven and unsettled movements of horse drawn coaches.
It weighs approximately 117g.
