A Burmese Large Silver Cigar Box with Elephant Battle Scenes
This beautiful large silver cigar box was made for Bangkok retail in Burma/Myanmar, circa 1910 to1920. Burmese silver is well known for deep-chasing technique to decorate a continuous scene, in this case, an elephant battle.
I believe the decorated scenes on all sides of silver box are related to the Battle of Nong Sarai, which occurred in Suphanburi, north west of Bangkok. Thailand was invaded by Burma, and elephant-riding battles were held many times. In 1593, the most famous battle took place between King Naresuan from Thailand and Burmese ruler, King Minchit Sra. Naresuan won the battle and gained independence from Burma. This historical elephant battle scene is well known as Yuddhahatthi, and this special day is now commemorated as Royal Thai Armed Forces Day.
Large cigar boxes are rare and sought after. This box is remarkably large and of good quality. It measures approximately 17.7 by 27.3 by 12.2 cm (7 by 10.7 by 4.8 inches).
